Room for Art is pleased to present the digital paintings of Josh Millis. These works examine the spaces of learning and the tools that make classrooms easily identifiable.
Josh Millis is a Brooklyn-based painter whose work explores the built environments of everyday American life — schools, domestic interiors, public institutions — rendered with a flat, saturated directness that sits somewhere between memory and observation. He studied art and art history at Tyler School of Art at Temple University, including the Temple-Rome Program, and earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was a Graduate Fellow. His work has been exhibited in New York, Connecticut, Spain, and France, and he received three BRIO awards from the Bronx Council on the Arts recognizing his painting and drawing practice.
Millis has taught at Pratt Institute, the Queens Museum, the New York Public Library, and Studio in a School — the organization whose mission shaped much of his approach to art as a social and spatial practice. His series School Days, on view at Room for Art, takes the public school as its subject — hallways, signage, surfaces — rendered as flat, saturated color fields that ask what these spaces hold — and what they leave behind.
